Choose the room and how your furniture stands. The plan below is drawn to scale against real sofas, beds and tables, and the sizes underneath are the ones that actually clear them.
The front legs of the sofa and the chairs stand on the rug, the back legs stay on the floor. It is the most forgiving layout and the one most rooms end up with.

Measured against a 213 cm three-seat sofa: 8 × 10 ft leaves about 46 cm of rug past each arm, 6 × 9 ft about 30 cm, and 5 × 8 ft about 15 cm — which reads as a near miss rather than a choice.
The seventeen standard sizes, in your unit and the other one. Any of them can be woven to a different measurement if none of them fits.

Two shapes where the room decides the size rather than the furniture.
A runner is 70 to 90 cm wide and anything from 1.8 to 6 m long. The width is decided by the hall, not by taste: leave 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side so the runner reads as a rug rather than as carpet. The length is the hall minus about 40 cm, which keeps it clear of the skirting at both ends and of any door that swings inward.
A round rug answers a round table or a square room. Under a table, take the table's diameter and add 120 cm, so a chair keeps all four legs on the rug when it is pushed back. On its own, a round rug wants space around it: it is the one shape that looks wrong pushed against a wall.
Five minutes with a tape and a roll of masking tape will settle it better than any calculator.
Take the clear floor between the walls, ignoring skirting, radiators and the swing of every door. Write down both numbers in centimetres.
The width of the sofa across its arms, the bed across its frame, the table across its top. These decide the size far more than the room does.
Mark the size on the floor with masking tape and leave it for a day. Walk the route you always walk. It is the only test that catches a rug that is 30 cm too small.
A hand-knotted rug is 8 to 12 mm thick and a hand-tufted one can be 15 mm. Open every door that swings over the rug before you order.
A rug that is slightly too big reads as generous. A rug that is slightly too small reads as a mat, and no amount of furniture arrangement fixes it.
