Kyoto Stone is a block-print design of interlocking circles and squares in oat beige, charcoal and indigo, drawn as if pressed onto cloth from carved wooden blocks. It is hand-knotted at 120 knots per square inch in wool with 30 percent silk, and the silk is used for the indigo lines, which gives them a soft gleam against the matt oat ground. The quiet palette and loose geometry suit a living room with low furniture, a bedroom or an entrance hall. The 8 ft round is the most natural size for the design, and it is also made in 4 × 6 and 5 × 8 ft.
Knotted in Bhadohi from a drawing taken from a hand-printed textile. The slight unevenness of block printing, where each stamp lands a little differently, is copied onto the cartoon square by square so that the finished rug keeps the character of cloth rather than looking machine-perfect.

Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.
Crafted by the weavers of Bhadohi
Bhadohi and neighbouring Mirzapur, on the Ganges plain between Varanasi and Prayagraj, form India's largest hand-knotting region, and the Bhadohi hand-made carpet carries a geographical indication. Most rugs are knotted in weaving families' homes on upright looms, then brought to town to be washed, clipped and finished.
