A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.

Kashmir Millefleur Ruby is a field of tiny flowering plants in ivory and charcoal on a ruby-red ground, knotted entirely in silk at 361 knots per square inch. From across the room it reads as a deep red with a fine, even texture; close up you can see the leaves and flowers of each plant. The silk gives the red a depth that shifts with the light. It comes in 2 × 3, 3 × 5 and 4 × 6 ft, and it suits a bedside, a study or a wall, where it can be seen closely.
Woven in Kashmir, where millefleur designs are written out in talim, the valley's coded pattern script, and knotted in silk on silk warps. Each small plant is given a slightly different mix of colours, a choice made by the weaver at the loom, which keeps the field lively rather than printed.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 361 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

In Kashmir a carpet design is written as talim, a coded script of colours and knot counts that the head weaver calls out at the loom. The valley is known for silk and wool-and-silk rugs with very fine knotting, made mostly in homes around Srinagar through the long winters.
