A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
196knots per square inchVery fine
An indigo field covered with a trellis of chinar leaves, the maple-like tree that shades Srinagar's gardens, drawn in red and ivory. The trellis repeats evenly across the rug, so it holds together in any room and does not need a central piece of furniture to line up with. Srinagar Chinar is knotted at 196 knots per square inch in a 70:30 blend of wool and silk; the silk lifts the ivory veins of each leaf off the dark ground. The deep blue suits a study or a bedroom with warm wood, and it comes in four sizes from 3 × 5 ft to 6 × 9 ft.
Woven in the villages around Srinagar, where most Kashmiri carpets are knotted in homes rather than factories. The weaver follows a talim, the valley's coded pattern script, and the chinar is one of its oldest motifs, repeated here in a trellis first recorded on Mughal carpets.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 196 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

In Kashmir a carpet design is written as talim, a coded script of colours and knot counts that the head weaver calls out at the loom. The valley is known for silk and wool-and-silk rugs with very fine knotting, made mostly in homes around Srinagar through the long winters.
