A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.

Pashmina Gateway frames a flowering garden inside an arched gateway, with pillars on either side and a lamp hanging from the arch, drawn in claret red, ivory and gold. The design comes from Kashmiri prayer and niche rugs, but at 5 × 8 ft and larger it becomes a room rug with a clear head and foot, so it works well at the end of a bed or facing a sofa. It is knotted at 121 knots per square inch in soft wool with a medium pile. The gold is used sparingly, on the lamp and the border, and warms the whole rug.
Woven in Kashmir in wool rather than silk, which lets the valley's weavers make larger pieces for everyday rooms. The wool is hand-spun and dyed in small batches in Srinagar before it goes out to the looms in the surrounding villages.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 121 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

In Kashmir a carpet design is written as talim, a coded script of colours and knot counts that the head weaver calls out at the loom. The valley is known for silk and wool-and-silk rugs with very fine knotting, made mostly in homes around Srinagar through the long winters.
