A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
144knots per square inchVery fine
Paisley Kani Garden borrows from the Kani shawls of Kashmir: rows of curling paisley, the boteh, linked by leafy vines in maroon and green on an ivory ground. The design is knotted at 144 knots per square inch in wool with 20 percent silk, which picks out the fine outlines of each paisley. It is a gentle, lively pattern that works in a bedroom or a sitting room, and the 2½ × 8 ft runner carries it into a corridor or along the side of a bed. The ivory ground brightens a darker room; keep it away from muddy entrances.
Knotted in Kashmir by weavers who also work the valley's shawl patterns into rugs. The paisley, called buta locally, was carried from shawls to carpets in the nineteenth century, and the talim for it is one of the most copied in the valley.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 144 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

In Kashmir a carpet design is written as talim, a coded script of colours and knot counts that the head weaver calls out at the loom. The valley is known for silk and wool-and-silk rugs with very fine knotting, made mostly in homes around Srinagar through the long winters.
