A flowering tree stands inside a pointed niche, with smaller plants at its roots and birds in the branches, drawn in red, ivory and leaf green. Kashmir Tree of Life is knotted entirely in silk at 324 knots per square inch, so the finest stems are a single knot wide and the colours have the clean edges only silk can hold. The niche gives the rug a clear top and bottom, and it looks best where it can be seen whole: at the foot of a bed, in a study or hung on a wall. The 5 × 8 ft size is made to order and ships in about seven weeks.
Woven in Kashmir, where the design is written out as talim, a coded script of colours and knot counts that the head weaver reads aloud or sings to the others at the loom. Kashmiri silk rugs are made through the long winters, when the valley's weavers work indoors.

Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.
