A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
160knots per square inchVery fine
A crimson field, a lobed ivory medallion and navy corner spandrels: the classic Tabriz layout, drawn tight enough to read from across the room. It is tied at 160 knots per square inch in hand-spun wool, with silk used for the outlines of the medallion and the scrolling vines around it, so the fine lines catch the light as you walk past. The main border repeats the three colours between two narrow guard stripes, which keeps the design settled under a sofa or a dining table. The 5 × 8 ft size suits a living room with a three-seat sofa; the 8 × 10 ft sits under a six-seat table with room for the chairs to slide out.
Woven in Bhadohi, the carpet belt on the Ganges plain east of Varanasi. The design is drawn on squared paper, one square per knot, and the weaver reads it row by row from the bottom up. Silk is added only where the drawing needs a sharper line, which is why the medallion looks crisper than the field.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 160 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Bhadohi and neighbouring Mirzapur, on the Ganges plain between Varanasi and Prayagraj, form India's largest hand-knotting region, and the Bhadohi hand-made carpet carries a geographical indication. Most rugs are knotted in weaving families' homes on upright looms, then brought to town to be washed, clipped and finished.

The silk outlines catch the light in the evening exactly as described. The red is deeper than it looked on my screen, closer to wine, which suits our room better. It arrived tightly rolled and lay flat after a day.

You can feel the quality when you unroll it: dense, heavy and the back is as neat as the front. It anchors the whole living room, and it reached us in five days.

One end of the fringe was a little uneven and the team offered to have it trimmed. In the end we liked it as it is. The knotting on the back is very even and the medallion is sharp.

We bought the 8 × 10 last year and added the runner for the hall. The colours match perfectly, which I did not expect from two separate orders.
