A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.

Kazak Hallway Runner is a narrow runner with a line of stepped medallions in indigo and ivory on a camel-beige ground, in the style of the Kazak rugs of the southern Caucasus. It is hand-knotted at 70 knots per square inch in thick, hand-spun wool, with a long pile that is hard-wearing in a busy hallway or on a staircase landing. The camel ground is kind to dust and footprints, which suits an entrance. It comes in 2½ × 8, 2½ × 10 and 2½ × 12 ft, so you can fit it to your corridor with a margin of bare floor at each end.
Woven in the Mazar-i-Sharif region of northern Afghanistan, where weavers have long made Kazak-style rugs from hand-spun local wool. Runners are knotted on narrow horizontal looms staked out on the ground, and the medallions are counted out from a short woven sample kept beside the loom.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 70 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Around Mazar-i-Sharif, Turkmen and Uzbek families weave on horizontal looms pegged out on the ground, often from memory rather than a drawn design. The region is known for hand-spun wool, bold geometric rugs and soumaks, and for Kazak-style designs first made in the Caucasus.
