A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.

Star Kazak Noir has large eight-pointed stars in ivory and crimson on a charcoal-black ground. The contrast makes it a statement rug in a room with pale walls or plain furniture, and the dark ground is practical in a room with heavy use. It is hand-knotted at 60 knots per square inch in thick wool with a long pile. The stars are spaced widely, so the rug reads clearly even with a coffee table on top. It suits a living room, a bedroom or a study, and comes in 4 × 6, 5 × 8 and 6 × 9 ft.
Woven in the Mazar-i-Sharif region of northern Afghanistan in the style of Caucasian star Kazaks. The dark ground is knotted in undyed black-brown wool from local sheep, which is stronger than dyed black wool and keeps its colour, softening slightly with age.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 60 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Around Mazar-i-Sharif, Turkmen and Uzbek families weave on horizontal looms pegged out on the ground, often from memory rather than a drawn design. The region is known for hand-spun wool, bold geometric rugs and soumaks, and for Kazak-style designs first made in the Caucasus.
