What the weave is, what it's made of and where it came from.
Flat-woven
Woven flat on a loom: no pile, and reversible, so it can be turned over to spread the wear.
Anatolian Kilim has rows of stepped diamonds and hooked motifs in ember red, indigo and ivory, woven flat with no pile. Kilims are reversible, light enough to lift and easy to move between rooms, and this one lies flat under furniture without raising the legs of a sofa or a bed. The colours are strong enough to anchor a plain living room and the pattern stays clear from a distance. It comes in 3 × 5, 4 × 6 and 5 × 8 ft and as a 2½ × 10 ft runner, so the same design can run from a sitting room into the hall.
Woven in the villages around Konya, where kilims have been made on upright and ground looms for centuries. The weft is packed tightly over the warp threads, and each colour is woven in its own section of the row, which leaves the small vertical slits between colours that are typical of Anatolian kilims.

Konya, the old Seljuk capital on the Anatolian plateau, and the villages around it have woven kilims and pile rugs for centuries. Designs are often passed down within families and woven from memory, with bold colours and stepped, hooked motifs.
