A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.

Ushak Lotto Classic has a crimson field with a yellow-gold lattice of arabesques outlined in indigo, the classic Lotto design, framed by a border of cloud bands. It is hand-knotted at 70 knots per square inch in wool with a medium pile that stands up to daily use. The repeating pattern means it looks right from every side, which makes it an easy rug for a living room, a bedroom or a dining room. It comes in 5 × 8, 8 × 10 and 9 × 12 ft and as a 2½ × 10 ft runner, so one design can run through a house.
Knotted near Jaipur with Turkish symmetric knots, the same knot used on the original Anatolian carpets. The gold is dyed to match old Lotto rugs and the finished rug is washed only lightly after cutting, so the crimson stays strong and the lattice stays sharp.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 70 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Jaipur has made rugs since the nineteenth century, when carpet workshops were set up in the city's jail. The villages around it now knot heavy village designs and weave cotton dhurries on pit looms, and the town's dyers and finishing yards give rugs their strong colours or their softened, washed look.

I first saw this design in a painting at a museum and never expected to own one. The yellow lattice is crisp and the red is strong.

We bought the 9 × 12 for the living room and the runner for the hall. Together they make the whole floor feel planned.

A few rows are clipped slightly shorter, which I understand is normal for hand-knotting. It does not show from standing height.
