A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
100knots per square inchFine
Linea is a striped rug: bands of mustard gold, oxblood and ivory of different widths running across it, knotted at 100 knots per square inch in Himalayan wool. The stripes waver very slightly at their edges, the mark of hand-knotting, which keeps the design from looking mechanical and makes it feel closer to a woven textile than a print. Laid across a room it makes a space feel wider; laid lengthways it leads the eye through. It suits a modern living room, a bedroom or a dining room, and the 2½ × 10 ft runner carries the stripes down a hall.
Knotted in Kathmandu with the Tibetan loop knot. Plain stripes show every change in tension, so the weavers beat each row down evenly with a heavy comb and check the width of every band against a marked stick hung from the loom before they start the next colour.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 100 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Rug weaving in the Kathmandu valley grew from the Tibetan weavers who settled there in the 1960s. Rugs are knotted with the Tibetan loop technique in Himalayan wool, which is rich in lanolin and soft underfoot, and the valley is known for modern designs, stripes and tonal washes.
