A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
64knots per square inchFine
Milas Terracotta takes a sixteenth-century Anatolian design, the kind once hung in the churches of Transylvania, and knots it in soft wool at 64 knots per square inch. A scarlet field holds an all-over lattice of small flowers and hooked motifs in navy and ivory, framed by a border of cartouches. The pattern is dense but evenly spread, so it sits well under furniture in a living room or a dining room. It comes in 5 × 8 and 8 × 10 ft and as a 2½ × 8 ft runner.
Woven near Jaipur by weavers who make Turkish designs using the symmetric knot, the same knot used in Anatolia. The wool is dyed with the deep scarlet the originals are known for and washed only lightly, so the red stays strong.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 64 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Jaipur has made rugs since the nineteenth century, when carpet workshops were set up in the city's jail. The villages around it now knot heavy village designs and weave cotton dhurries on pit looms, and the town's dyers and finishing yards give rugs their strong colours or their softened, washed look.
