A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
250knots per square inchVery fine
Isfahan Royal takes the court carpets of seventeenth-century Isfahan as its model: an ivory ground covered edge to edge with palmettes, split leaves and cloud bands in navy and a warm beige. There is no single medallion, so the pattern reads the same from every side of a room, which makes it an easy choice for a bedroom or a sitting room with seating on several sides. At 250 knots per square inch in a 60:40 blend of wool and silk, the drawing is fine enough to show the veins on individual leaves. The silk gives the ivory a soft sheen that changes with the direction of the pile.
Woven in Agra, where carpet workshops have worked since the Mughal court set them up in the sixteenth century. Fine wool-and-silk pieces like this are knotted by small teams of two or three weavers sitting side by side at one loom, each responsible for their own section of every row.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 250 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Agra's carpet workshops go back to the Mughal court, which brought Persian weavers to the city in the sixteenth century. Today the city is known for fine wool-and-silk rugs knotted by small teams at wide looms, often to the old court designs, and for the patient finishing that fine knotting needs.

We almost hung it on the wall. The ivory has a soft sheen from the silk and the leaves in the pattern really do have veins. It lives in our bedroom now.

Exactly what we wanted for a room with patterned curtains: detailed up close, calm from across the room. Excellent packing.

It is a fine rug and not one for a busy hallway. We keep it in the sitting room and take shoes off. The quality is clear the moment you touch it.
