What the weave is, what it's made of and where it came from.
Flat-woven
Woven flat on a loom: no pile, and reversible, so it can be turned over to spread the wear.
Afghan Soumak is woven in the soumak technique: the weft is wrapped around the warp threads rather than passed straight through them, which makes a flat but thick surface with a fine herringbone ridge. Terracotta, teal and ivory form bold tribal motifs of hooked diamonds, small animals and stars. It is sturdier than a plain kilim and lies flat, which makes it a good rug for a living room or a study with heavy use, or for a spot where a pile rug would catch a door. It comes in 3 × 5, 5 × 8 and 6 × 9 ft.
Woven in the Mazar-i-Sharif region of northern Afghanistan, where Turkmen and Uzbek families make soumaks on horizontal looms pegged out on the ground. Wrapping the weft takes longer than plain kilim weaving, and the motifs are usually worked from memory, so small differences between rugs are part of the style.

Around Mazar-i-Sharif, Turkmen and Uzbek families weave on horizontal looms pegged out on the ground, often from memory rather than a drawn design. The region is known for hand-spun wool, bold geometric rugs and soumaks, and for Kazak-style designs first made in the Caucasus.
