A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
80knots per square inchFine
Bakhtiari rugs divide the field into rows of panels, like the beds of a garden seen from above, each holding a tree, a flower or a small medallion. Here the panels are drawn in olive green, indigo navy and terracotta rust on a dark ground, so the rug reads as a pattern of squares from a distance and as a garden up close. Knotted at 80 knots per square inch in hand-spun wool, it is sturdy enough for a living room or a dining room, and the repeating panels make it easy to size: in 5 × 8, 8 × 10 and 9 × 12 ft there is no central motif to line up with the furniture.
Woven in Bhadohi to a garden-panel design first made by Bakhtiari weavers in western Iran. The cartoon is split so that two weavers can each work their own column of panels, and the colours are checked against a strip of dyed yarn pinned to the loom.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 80 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Bhadohi and neighbouring Mirzapur, on the Ganges plain between Varanasi and Prayagraj, form India's largest hand-knotting region, and the Bhadohi hand-made carpet carries a geographical indication. Most rugs are knotted in weaving families' homes on upright looms, then brought to town to be washed, clipped and finished.
