A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
60knots per square inchFine
Heriz rugs are known for their bold, angular medallions, and this one keeps the look: a large stepped medallion in deep maroon on a camel-beige field, framed by an ivory border of hooked leaves. At 60 knots per square inch the knotting is coarse by design, and the thick, springy wool pile is built for heavy traffic, which is why Heriz weaves have long been chosen for busy living rooms and dining rooms. The geometric drawing sits comfortably with both traditional wooden furniture and plain modern sofas. It comes in four room sizes up to 9 × 12 ft and as a 2½ × 12 ft runner for a long corridor.
Woven near Jaipur by weavers who specialise in heavier village designs. The wool is spun thicker than for city rugs and each knot is tied over a wider gap in the warp, then beaten down hard with a metal comb, which is what gives a Heriz its weight and its long life underfoot.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 60 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Jaipur has made rugs since the nineteenth century, when carpet workshops were set up in the city's jail. The villages around it now knot heavy village designs and weave cotton dhurries on pit looms, and the town's dyers and finishing yards give rugs their strong colours or their softened, washed look.

Thick and springy, and it hides everything our two boys drop on it. The maroon medallion looks good with our old teak furniture and our new sofa.

I grew up with a Heriz in my parents' house and this has the same bold drawing and weight. Very happy with it.

The corners curled for the first week after unrolling, which the care note warned about. It is flat now and looks great.

Our corridor is almost 13 ft and the 12 ft runner is exactly right. Most shops stop at 10 ft.
