Isfahan Lapis Medallion

Isfahan Lapis Medallion sets a lapis-blue medallion on a turquoise field scattered with gold palmettes, the colours of the tiled domes of Isfahan. It is knotted at 220 knots per square inch in wool with 30 percent silk, which brightens the turquoise and gives the gold a soft glow. The cool palette suits a bedroom or a formal sitting room with white walls, and it brings colour to a room without red. The medallion gives the rug a clear centre, so it looks best under a coffee table or at the foot of a bed. It comes in 4 × 6, 5 × 8 and 6 × 9 ft.

Knotted in Agra by a small workshop that specialises in fine medallion rugs. The medallion is drawn on the cartoon in full rather than as a mirrored quarter, so the weavers can correct each side by eye as the rug grows and keep it perfectly centred.

Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.
