A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
500knots per square inchCollector silk
Qom Silk Floral is knotted entirely in silk at 500 knots per square inch, the finest rug in the collection. A cypress tree and flowering branches rise through an arched prayer niche on an ivory ground, drawn in rust, coral and deep navy, with a narrow border of rosettes. Pure silk gives a sharp, almost printed line and a sheen that shifts from pale to rich as you move around the rug. It is made in small sizes, from 2 × 3 ft to 4 × 6 ft, and is best placed where it is admired rather than walked on: at the foot of a bed, in a reading corner or hung on a wall. Iranian-made; it cannot be delivered to the United States.
Woven in Qom, a city south of Tehran that became a centre for silk rugs in the twentieth century. Silk thread this fine is tied with a hooked knife on silk warps, and a single row can take a weaver most of a morning, which is why these rugs are made only in small formats.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 500 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Qom, south of Tehran, became one of Iran's main centres for silk rugs in the twentieth century. Its weavers knot pure silk on silk warps at very high densities, which allows small, detailed designs with a strong sheen. Iranian-made rugs cannot be shipped to the United States.
