A rose-red field, a forest-green medallion and an ivory border, all in hand-knotted wool at 120 knots per square inch. The medallion is ringed with small palmettes, and the field fills with vines that open into flowers towards the corners, the way a Persian garden plan fills a walled courtyard. The dense wool pile is forgiving in a family room: it hides the marks of daily use and softens as it is walked on. Kashan Garden comes in four rectangles from 3 × 5 ft to 8 × 10 ft and as an 8 ft round, which centres well under a circular dining table or in a square entrance hall.
Knotted in Bhadohi from wool spun in the district and dyed in small lots, so each rug holds a faint, even variation in the red known as abrash. After cutting from the loom it is washed, stretched flat on a frame to dry and hand-clipped to an even pile, then the fringe is knotted to stop it fraying.

Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.
Crafted by the weavers of Bhadohi
Bhadohi and neighbouring Mirzapur, on the Ganges plain between Varanasi and Prayagraj, form India's largest hand-knotting region, and the Bhadohi hand-made carpet carries a geographical indication. Most rugs are knotted in weaving families' homes on upright looms, then brought to town to be washed, clipped and finished.

The round is perfect under our table

Slightly lighter red than the photo
A beautiful, soft rug. The field is a rose red rather than the deep red I imagined, but it works well with our pale walls. The pile is thick and quiet underfoot.
