A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
100knots per square inchFine
Sarouk rugs are recognised by their sprays of flowers set on a clear field, and this one uses a raspberry-pink ground with teal leaves and ivory blossoms growing out from a small central cluster. The wool is knotted at 100 knots per square inch and clipped to a medium pile that feels soft and full underfoot. The palette is warmer than a classic red Sarouk, which lets it work in a bedroom or a sitting room with pale walls and wood floors. It comes in four sizes, from 4 × 6 ft up to 8 × 10 ft, so the same design can run through a living room and a dining room.
Knotted in Bhadohi, where many weaving families work on vertical looms set up in their own homes and deliver finished rugs to the washing and finishing yards in town. The pink is dyed separately from the red so that the two stay distinct once the rug has been washed.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 100 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Bhadohi and neighbouring Mirzapur, on the Ganges plain between Varanasi and Prayagraj, form India's largest hand-knotting region, and the Bhadohi hand-made carpet carries a geographical indication. Most rugs are knotted in weaving families' homes on upright looms, then brought to town to be washed, clipped and finished.
