A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
90knots per square inchFine
Hamadan Runner has a brick-red field covered with small repeating flowers and leaves in ivory and indigo, the kind of all-over design found on village rugs from western Iran. It is hand-knotted at 90 knots per square inch in wool, with a firm pile that stands up to heavy traffic in a hall or on a landing. Because the pattern repeats rather than building to a centre, it looks complete at any length and there is no medallion to line up with a door. It comes in 2½ × 8, 2½ × 10 and 2½ × 12 ft.
Knotted in Bhadohi, where long runners are woven on narrow looms kept just for them. The weaver works from a short repeat on the cartoon, reading the same few rows again and again as the runner grows, and checks the width at every repeat so the edges stay straight over the full length.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 90 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Bhadohi and neighbouring Mirzapur, on the Ganges plain between Varanasi and Prayagraj, form India's largest hand-knotting region, and the Bhadohi hand-made carpet carries a geographical indication. Most rugs are knotted in weaving families' homes on upright looms, then brought to town to be washed, clipped and finished.
