A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.

Khorasan Tree Runner has a series of flowering trees in indigo, ivory and rose standing one after another along its length, in the style of rugs from Khorasan in north-eastern Iran. It is hand-knotted at 100 knots per square inch in wool, with a medium pile that is comfortable underfoot. The trees give a corridor a gentle rhythm, like walking past a garden wall. It suits a hallway, a landing or an entrance, and it comes in 2½ × 8 and 2½ × 10 ft.
Knotted in Agra. Each tree is drawn in full on the cartoon rather than repeated from one template, so the weavers can vary the flowers from tree to tree while keeping the spacing even. The rose is kept to the blossoms so the indigo stays the main colour.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 100 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Agra's carpet workshops go back to the Mughal court, which brought Persian weavers to the city in the sixteenth century. Today the city is known for fine wool-and-silk rugs knotted by small teams at wide looms, often to the old court designs, and for the patient finishing that fine knotting needs.
