A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
200knots per square inchVery fine
Kashan Silk Vine has a brick-red field filled from edge to edge with scrolling vines, small palmettes and flowers in sage green and ivory, with no central medallion to interrupt it. It is knotted at 200 knots per square inch in a 60:40 blend of wool and silk, which makes the vines fine and clear and gives the ivory flowers a soft shine. The warm red suits a bedroom, a study or a sitting room with wood and brass. It comes in 3 × 5, 4 × 6 and 5 × 8 ft, sizes that also work as a hanging.
Knotted in Agra, whose workshops have made fine carpets since the Mughal court. The silk is used for the vines and flowers only, so the rug keeps the warmth and durability of a wool pile while the fine lines get the sharpness that only silk gives.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 200 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Agra's carpet workshops go back to the Mughal court, which brought Persian weavers to the city in the sixteenth century. Today the city is known for fine wool-and-silk rugs knotted by small teams at wide looms, often to the old court designs, and for the patient finishing that fine knotting needs.
