A weaver reads the design off squared paper where one square is one knot. The square below is one square inch of this rug, drawn at its real density.
180knots per square inchVery fine
Kerman Heritage is a vase design: magenta-pink flowers, navy stems and ivory leaves spread across the whole field from urns that repeat in rows, with no medallion to anchor it. Knotted at 180 knots per square inch in a 75:25 blend of wool and silk, the drawing is fine enough to show individual petals, and the silk brings out the ivory. The all-over pattern makes the rug easy to place in rooms with irregular furniture, and it comes in four rectangles and as a 6 ft round, a good size for a hallway table or a reading chair.
Woven in Agra, where fine vase-pattern carpets have been made since the Mughal period. The weavers use the Persian asymmetric knot, which lets curved stems and petals be drawn more smoothly than the symmetric knot allows, and the silk is kept for the ivory so it shines against the wool.

Every hand-knotted rug comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its design, size, materials, where it was woven and its knot count: 180 knots per square inch.
Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.

Agra's carpet workshops go back to the Mughal court, which brought Persian weavers to the city in the sixteenth century. Today the city is known for fine wool-and-silk rugs knotted by small teams at wide looms, often to the old court designs, and for the patient finishing that fine knotting needs.
