Mashhad Indigo Bloom

Mashhad Indigo Bloom has a deep indigo field with sprays of rose-pink flowers and sage leaves spreading from a soft central cluster, framed by a border of trailing blossoms. It is hand-knotted at 110 knots per square inch in wool and clipped to a medium pile. The dark field hides everyday wear, which makes it a good rug for a living room or a dining room where it will be walked on daily, and the pink keeps the blue from feeling cold. It comes in four sizes from 5 × 8 ft to 9 × 12 ft.

Knotted in Bhadohi to a floral design from Mashhad in north-eastern Iran. The indigo is built up in several dips of the dye bath to reach its depth, and the rug is washed only lightly after cutting from the loom so that the blue stays dark and the pink stays clear.

Hand-knotted rugs are made one at a time, so the size, the colour and the edges can differ slightly from the photographs. That is the mark of the hand, not a fault.
